Lili Nascimento is in town!

We are delighted to welcome Lili Nascimento, to our rehearsal studio this week.

Lili is the grand-daughter of one of the founders of Mocidade Alegre in Sao Paulo and is truly steeped in samba history and culture.  She will be inspiring us with her stories and demonstrating her technique to the members of Morro 16.

Twenty years of samba in Co. Louth!!!!

Who would have thought that the historic town of Drogheda would become the epicentre of samba in Ireland for a full weekend every year.  2013 marks twenty years of the Drogheda Samba Festival.

Morro 16 have been performing at the Festival since the band's formation and have a tradition of doing the Sunday parade in fancy dress, in line with our ethos of "Street Bloco".

Many thanks to Phil and Brian and the good folks of Drogheda for hosting this essential event in the samba calendar.  It is such a great opportunity for Morro 16 to meet up with our festival friends and colleagues across Ireland as well as the overseas guests who visit each year.

This year saw the wettest parade known to man!! There was a torrential downpour on Saturday, just as we set out.  However, spirits were high, despite the rain!!!

A sunny St Patricks celebration!!!

We were invited back to play at the St. Patrick's Festival this year, this is an event we always enjoy!

Morro 16 played three sets in Merrion Square gardens on the Sunday of the festival weekend as part of the Big Day out.

This was the first really warm day so far this year and we had such a great day in the park.

Many thanks and well done to all the crew at the St. Patrick's Festival for the superb organisation on the day.

Goodbye to Di

Morro 16 would like to send our sympathies to the family of the late Di Foden.

Di was a long-standing member of the London School of Samba and passed away in November 2011 after a battle with cancer.

Di will always be remembered for her sense of fun, her wit, her style and above all her loyalty to the London School of Samba.  Caroline and Mike from Morro 16 knew Di since the early days and we'd like to share some memories of her here:

Back in the early 1990s Di givin' it some welly during the Poll Tax marches.

Di givin' it socks at the celebration of her wedding to Norrie this summer

Sambista to the end!

Bloco de Dublin

As part of the Big Bang Festival happening in Dublin this weekend, Morro 16 are leading a collaborative performance with a bateria of 60 drummers and musicians made up from members of samba groups from all over Ireland as well as special guest appearances from some of our Brazilian musician friends in Dublin.

This group are called "Bloco de Dublin" and we aim to bring a taste of Rio de Janeiro to Dublin by performing an authentic "samba enredo".

The performance will take place in St. Stephen's Green on Sunday afternoon, August 21st.

Morro 16 at Waterford Tall Ships Festival

We have just got back from a great day out at Waterford.

After a debut at Waterford Spraoi last year, Morro 16 were invited back to Waterford this year to bring the sounds of Rio to Ireland's largest outdoor festival of 2011.

This year, Morro 16 teamed up with our fabulous new dancer Jill to add a touch of spice to the day.

Here are some photos from the day....

St Patrick's Carnival!!!

Morro 16 had great craic with thousands of Brazilians in Temple Bar for Paddy's Day this year.  We were delighted to respond to Renata and Victor's (Boteco Brasileiro) invitation to add some samba beats to the carnival-like gathering in Temple Bar.

Apart from the cold March weather you could be mistaken for thinking that a little bit of Rio de Janeiro landed in Dublin City centre as crowds of party goers followed our bloco move through town towards the Boteco party.

We're really delighted to see so many Brazilians now living in Dublin and adding so much warmth to our national holiday.

Learning from the Master!

At the start of May 2010, some of our members did a 2-day workshop with Mestre Jonas from Rio de Janeiro.  Jonas is a highly respected samba master who has led Mocidade and Cubango's baterias.

Our friend Simeon from MaSamba arranged the workshop.

Jonas focussed on improving our technique on key instruments and showed us patterns from some of Rio's top samba school as well as teaching us new grooves and some wicked breaks!

We were honoured to spend time in the presence of this great teacher and gave him one of our Morro 16 T-shirts as a souvenir of his visit.  We're looking forward to meeting him again some day in Rio.
